The slingshot of ancient times could be a very effective weapon, as David demonstrated. The sling was a band of leather, wide in the middle to hold a stone. With the ends held together, it was swung around the head, until one end was released so that the stone could fly to its mark. The stone, often weighing one pound or more, could be hurled at 90-100 miles an hour.
